Why defensive? You were critiquing someone's work; offering your opinion, as is your right, and I was merely stating my opinion, that your opinion seemed unnecessarily harsh, unless you really have a high standard, and in that case, it is understandable. So, I asked for some info/examples of yours, or someone else's (if you have none of your own), by which you judge all work. For example- I love the american handmade bike show, and that seems to be everyone's finest work on display, and yes, this falls short of that. But again, why be defensive; I was being genuine when asking about your work, since you brought it up, in the first place. Also, your new here, (welcome!), and I'm sorry I'm not familiar with you, (hope I don't have to use a blushing emoticon when you turn out to be some awesome person that I dare not know), so just looking for more info- that's all.

You're right. I was offering my opinion on the cranks in question. You were offering an opinion about my opinion. Not exactly the same thing.

I'm not actually defensive but if somebody is going to call me out as harsh, I feel the need to answer.

You do not have to be sorry that you're not familiar with me. I'm new and happy being unfamiliar.

I'm not sure why you want me to offer some sort of benchmark for which I gauge excellence in the craft of bike painting but it's like p*rn, I can't define it but know it when I see it.

Do any of us need a "good" reason to gaze at bike pron; post if, if you got it. or don't.

As for quoting Potter Stewart, again, great for porn (of the non-bike variety), but a little less obvious in more subjective matters.

As for Veronica Moser, you wouldn't happen to know Rumpy, as he wrote me something about goldenshowers, a few weeks back, over on the 80's MTB thread. I'm beginning to see a connection   ;)

I cant see the fuss - they are not being sold as perfect - the pictures are big enough to show imperfections and there is nowt stopping you asking a question.

I just thought they were nice looking cranks and I've seen that paint scheme here. Had no idea a 'jonrock' discussion would breakout.

The fact that such a nice set would be deemed unworthy of jonrock by those familiar with his work speaks to his ability.

Others made critical comments too and their expertise wasn't challenged (Even if some retracted out of respect). As a noob - I felt obliged to offer a little support to girl.

TBH it's often hard for me to justify paying top dollar for that premium condition part on a bike that is going to see abuse. If a little run gets me a deal on a crankset that is otherwise gorgeous I'll deal with it.
