Kona Misser replica 1997

Damn, missed that one.

It was a large one as well, in spanking nick, US based.

Note how it also has a disc tab.

Whilst I have this bumped, it's a good reminder for the wish-list. Wheels, brakes and tyres are the priority so if anyone has anything here in great condition then please let me know.

Thanks for sharing the picture of the frame and info, was going to message you about it. Thankfully it would have been too big for me, nearer your size I would have thought?

If whilst during your research you find any info regarding the black frame that was used I would be interested to know more about that. Also any info about when they switched to/from the frames with the gold rear ends and slightly different side gusset plates on the front, same as the Sex Three DH from the mag you posted, which looks stunning by the way. Looking at various bikes/frames it looks, as stated by you above, that they may have used different parts to build the frames, the front triangle on the frame with gold stays is the same as the Turner with straight stays, though the gold stays used are the bent version, which I think was off the earlier model. Maybe Kona were given the chance to mix and match from existing parts when ordering the frame?

I've been trawling through a batch on MBAs from 1994 onwards. I've never seen or read these editions before. October 1996 is a peach with some excellent shots and narrative of the world cup events, which means:

Gold rear-end, and the first pic I've seen of him from the Quebec event.

Telling it how it is...although he's switched nationalities 🤣

I'll trawl through the rest of the MBAs I have to see if I have the edition and review they talk about. Later on in this edition they review a low-spec production version which has a nice intro about Turner.

Meanwhile acquiring parts continues to frustrate with avenues turning into dead ends. We'll get there, I just don't know when...

And here we can see this version, not Tomi's, in action:

Super cool with the early Magura disc brakes and callipers, Z1s, and what must be a first-gen DMax wheel. I have thought about using them as wheels and I may have to resort to them if I can't sort out Hope Big Un's on D521s.

This is one of the few photos I've seen of the original Z1 sliders (1997 judging by the stickers) with a Formula Disc brake mount running anything other than a Hope brake. There's an adapter fitted there, a Magura one to convert the Formula Mount to I assume International Standard for the Gustav M caliper. @kraeMit might also be interested if he hasn't seen it already.

Super cool isn't it? I just noticed they stuck Kona headtube stickers over where the Marzocchi stickers would appear on the front of the forks, presumably because it's very early pre-production, or they weren't meant to be running them considering the switch to Rock Shox Judy DHs. It's mad how much they were chopping and changing. Stuff breaking, stuff coming to market all the time. A transitional time that's for sure.

I have that adapter FS -> IS in stock - just if someone reads here and want to use that setup.🤙

Brace yourself: we have an actual project development that involves the build  🤣

Over the last six months I started extended searches and feelers for full/part bikes/builds of the era to obtain the parts I need, sharing on multiple channels. Unlike the traditional retro XC market, the downhill market is brutal. As mentioned many times, folks rode these bikes to the point of destruction, therefore the pool of good quality parts is much, much smaller. Add me and many others who have projects like this, and the worldwide enthusiasm for this era of the sport, demand for components is white-hot.

A few weeks ago a strong candidate came up for sale on Facebook. I've not officially bought anything through Facebook, only through trusted individuals on the platform (like here basically). Buying and selling through Facebook ads is like the wild-west, so I had zero expectations any transaction would go ahead. However, the universe aligned since the seller was based in the south-west and didn't want to be ship it. Long story short and a 7 hour round trip later yesterday, and a notably lighter wallet 😥 I now own a tank.

Do you know what make and model it is?

To be honest, I don't really care 🤣 it's the most extravagant donor bike! What I do care about are the wheels, brakes and callipers, levers, chain guard (possibly), seat-post (maybe). Particularly the wheelset, it's pristine and - fingers crossed - exactly what I need, and worth over half of what I paid total yesterday. The rest, frame, forks, chain-set, etc. will be sold to recoup funds for the rest of the build.

The next few weekends are packed, but I will get to this in August in advance of the Malverns Classic.

Impressive that you were able to get that many parts of one donor bike!

Maybe keep the frame around in case aluminum prices sky rocket and ypu will have a retirement fund.
