Kona Lava Dome 1996 Rebuild

Hi. Thought I’d share some pics of my latest project. I found the frame of this 96 Lava Dome Race Light online some time back and after sourcing a few original bits and pieces, decided to go with a slightly new lookFound a set of Mavic wheels for her and XT rear derailleur and thumbie making it then run as an 8 speed. Set of older Tektro v-brakes coupled with an original set of Curve levers. Sourced the Velocity stem and had a spare Kona Race Light bars in the shed. Also put on a set of Scratch&Sniff tires to finish her off. Weighing in a fraction under the 10kg mark, she is just about ready to leave the stables for a bit of fun. Let me know what you think.

‘96 was a good year for Kona. My ‘96 Kilauea was a superb bike. Love yours, proper time warp conditio.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Went for a quick around the block and it runs nimble and smooth. Was not sure on the Mavics as not quite period but a bit of flare without going over the top.

Nice job! I got exactly the same bike! The condition is still pretty good except for the tires. Any suggestions on tires if I mainly use it for roads and paved trails?

If you aren't concerned about period correct, Michelin Country Rock is great for that use, with a little gravel and hardpack ability to boot.

Nice job. I have a Cinder Cone of that era and have a relatively similar build, but the paint on mine looks crap.
