I've got too many projects on the go or else I'd have it - great bike and good price.

I think he started off asking for £450, which was unrealistic, and this is either the thrid or fourth listing with the price coming down each time. This time £325 asked, or offer, and he has an offer pending decision.

It's a good frame - 1998 Reynolds 631 as stated, size 19, but not all that valuable (£100?) The kit appears to be standard (including quite heavy Z3 fork), except for down-graded cranks and rear wheel. I would have thought £250, or maybe £300 if lucky.

Agree on the frame, I had the very same model a couple of years ago, lovely ride. Some reviews of the time mentioned that the bike was a great frame with average parts though. Personally I would look out for a similar frame or an 853 explosif and add the kit myself ;)

What's the difference in the way 631 rides compared to 853, is the 631 tubeset 'softer' ride ?

I have a '98 & it's a joy to ride but, I've never ridden an 853 :?

I'm the other way around, have a 98 Explosif, but never ridden a 631 Kilauea. And I don't know the specs for the 631 Kilauea either, as they never appeared on the Kona website (I don't suppose you have the owner's handbook, do you?)

It wouldn't surprise me though if the tube specs were the same as the Explosif, so I doubt if the 631 frame is much heavier - my guess is it would be close. And I don't know about softer either, the Explosif is a very smooth, very well-controlled ride. Maybe it's just that 853 is ultimately stronger than 631 - but Kona passed up the opportunity to make the Explosif lighter in favour of making it stronger.

Pity Lincoln isn't closer to Hove really, else we could run a comparative test sometime!

I think my 18" frame came in at 4.2lb on the kitchen scales

The ride is also smooth & controlled. Like you say I doubt there much in it.

Lincoln is pretty far from where you live for ride comparison but.... it's a nice thought :)

Don't have the owners handbook as I bought the frame some year back from a guy on stw.

cheers
Martin

Nah, too orange, too new and the whole thing just looks a bit rubbish to be honest!

For that money you could gat an amazing '95 with the classic square serif graphics and P2s in a nice subtle colour.

Dont waste your money, there's credit crunch you know!!??

I was watching this Explosif recently and for me this was far better as a proposition. A real bargain, especially compared to the pistachio one that sold a few months ago, and apologies for not outing I forgot all about it.

This is the bike (well frame) that used to belong to Hilts, until he and Bikeperv realised that they each had identical bikes, except that each had the size the other wanted, so they swapped frames. Hilts did an interesting thread in readers bikes, showing how they met up one day, swapped over all of their bits and bobs, and each departed a happier man.

Hilts also bought the pistachio 88/89 one of course (after I nudged his elbow). That merited its high price because it was one of the first and in such superb condition. These 1990 ones are in more plentiful supply. Both bikes hand painted by the great inspirer Paul Brodie of course.
