Kona headset sizes through the years?....me confused.

Hannah and I have been looking for a kona for her to ride and something I can't quite work out is the headset sizes.

I think really early konas ie 1991 or older had 1" headsets. But a 92 cinder cone we are looking at getting has a 1 1/8th.

But then a later 96 kilauea has a 1".

What's the deal? Is it a bit over the place? Did kona change their minds a few times or does it depend on the models? :?

From 94 and on all were 1 - 1/8th some 93's (hahhanah) were 1" for some reason.

if its a 96 Kilauea with a 1" then its dodgy/ not right!

If its to be ridden by someone called Hannah then surely the choice of model is already made for you and the head tube size is irrelevant? It HAS to be a Hahanna

What size is the 96 Kilauea, is it a big'un? I'm pretty sure some of the earlier to mid '90's Kona's had 1" headset on the larger frames, but the same frame in a smaller size went up to a 1 1/8...never seen it on high end models like a Kilauea though, but it could be the reason for a 1"

Unfortunately, that listing isn't quite reliable.

Konas had 1" systems until 1990, and from then on 1 1/8, except that the Fire Mountain and Hahanna stayed with 1" until 1993.

I guess the real question is why is size so important
do you have a man cave full of 1" acessories
or are you weighing up the relative merits of 1/8" difference in size
you guys crack me up.....or maybe I am not entirely reliable perhaps rainbow warrior

wow- good info and sorry but a very late reply from me.

We ended up buying the bonty from bontyben -not turned up yet.. :( so the above info on Konas is now useful for future.

The reason I had asked was purely so we could get a bike with 1 1/8th as it makes getting sus forks etc so much easier. Luckily the Bonty is a late 1 1/8th model...

Yep- we had looked at Hahanas for Hannah but too heavy/poverty spec'd.

Will bump this thread.

I purchased a 91 Explosif early this year and I've finally got around to removing the fork as it has the usual corrosion like all the other early Konas have on the fork and was thinking of stripping the paint off.
The strange thing is I've measured the fork with a vernier and it's come up as an 1" SB steerer, so single butted???

Reading the comments on here I thought they'd be the 1-1/8" TB jobbie's???
