But Add 1" to to get Kona's horizontal length is the easiest.
(i.e. my 19" 1993 Kilauea is 22" CTC along the tube, but has a horizontal as per kona and measured of 23". I know as I just measured it to check )

Also that is a shorter headtube as per the later frames (93 onwards, iirc waht Anthony said in posts.)

i dont think they were nammed after human ribs, it just means raised lines in any direction

Lots of items/design names are created based on similarity with body parts.
There aren't many tails at the front, feet on the top or heads at the bottom

As for the Explosif frame, is it possible that Kona badged up other frames as Explosif's just to clear stock? it seems odd how so many design cues can be evident on so many models with no clear distinction other than if it has a grooved down tube which itself isn't an absolute give away.

So in a nut shell if you don't have proof of the the model from the 1st owner then it's just a guessing game ..

No some have features and you can often get the year from the serial number.
Some are shared frames in the range anyway.
After that the lower end tend to look the same and hard to tell apart.

But here we have it down to two frames, one of which is a later model 92 explosif or a 93 kileuea. They are similar as they are made out of the same model of tubing as explosif moved to the higher grade stuff, hence moved to the newer frames as many companies did.
But there where changes between the years and also from my kileuea they use a heavier frame setup than I expect the explosif to have use, still the frames where not exactly light back then unless you went to a better company with better frames.

It looks and measures like a 1993 18" Kileuea but probably only Anthony y could separate it from later model 92 Explosif (assuming they where different) and be sure. At least with out serial numbers and his knowledge.

Right so if i understand correctly it's the lower end models that cause the most confusion due to the frames as such being fairly basic in design and pretty much alike in weight and such which makes using serial number ID pretty near impossible unlike the mid to higher end models where frame materials and design tend to vary but this years Lava dome design could easily be used for next years cinder cone but using a slightly heavier tubing as such ..

Thanks for these answers, let's Anthony comenting on that. By the way I have asked the guy who sold me the bike asking her cousin about the model (he said the bike was from her cousin which was doing competition more than 20 years ago; hopefully he could ask her)

Now that seems like the best route to get a definite answer so fingers crossed it shouldn't be too long ..

:shock: it seems her cousin does not know about the model :shock:
she said she will try to find which model it is, but for the moment no answer from her part...

So maybe I could try to remove the paint and have the frame serial number to help us in identifying it...
