KHS Montana Pro parts bin sh*tter

Feature Bike
So, inspired by @Tsundere ‘s excellent Anti-theft parts bin sh*tter thread, I’m going to mess around with an old KHS bike that has been banging around in the family for a while. A change in my commuting habits means I could do with a lock up and leave bike; but the commute includes a 300m climb, so it the bike needs to pretty light as well as cheap, shitty and practical. I’m thinking the quality frame on the Montana will be a good start.

This is how my son left it:

He’s done me a favour in covering it in a superbly arty layer of mud splat and chain rust, and the oury grips are nicely manky; but clearly there’s a fair bit that needs changing and de matching. Have dug out some wheels (rear nutted) and odd but light tyres.

I won’t be attempting the cammo paint effects that Tsundere mastered; instead, I think stickers and filth will feature heavily; although this one is going to have to go:

Well, that was a lot of fun. Shitster meets hipster? - practical, un-pretty and still under 13kg. I’ve elected to go with a quick release front wheel on the grounds that it can be removed and locked separately a few racks down: that way only top wheelie expert road men will see it as a ride home. Highlights for me are finding a Maliard corse freewheel (166g with cogs), and a sweet Dia compe left hand brake lever. Total outlay : £7 for basket and stickers.

First commute tomorrow 😬

I think that Harley Davidson sticker my confuse a would be thief. They might see it as the real deal and believe it's a $25,000 motor bike and be more inclined to take it.

Ha - that’s a good point. I think I’ve got some Mercedes Benz stickers somewhere which I’ll add - that way, by the time they’ve figured out what to steal I’ll be back.
