I polished mine at first, but a few winters of grime and salt started to really visibly attack my bikes. Now I prefer to wipe them over with an oily rag because it stops the damp getting to it and deteriorating it further.
The chrome isn't the problem........it's the metal underneath which "rusts". You need to exclude water and oxygen so covering with a layer of wax / oil / vaseline will do the job as good as anything. You could always use a regular spray of something which disperses water (water dispersant) which after 40 attempts was called water dispersant number 40
