Building relic bass guitars. Here's 001, the prototype, a late 60's Precison replica. Were it for sale it would be about £900, which for this sort of thing is a bargain, but I don't have any premises, staff, or overheads beyond material costs, so I can undercut the likes of Limelight considerably. Indeed, as a bit of a playful swipe at my main competitor, and as a nod to the genre of instrument, I'm selling them as "Grimelight".

Snap - I love music and love the bass but ran into exactly the same problem as you! Pretty poor when you can't pick up the easiest instrument in a band!

Back to the point though - great work on the bass, it looks spot on!

My main instrument is bass but I also play mandolin, guitar, double bass / EUB and can make a passable noise on a violin. Theoretically I could play cello to some degree too as I'm familiar with both the tuning and bow, but never had the opportunity to try.

Thanks team. I don't want it taking over my life, it'll be a causal affair. If I make £2500 profit a year I'd be indescribably pleased. I'll just be in itmfor the pleasure of building them.

"Build" can have many meanings in this regard.

I bought the body and neck, and did all the ageing of myself. Some folk machine or carve their own but that's beyond my equipment and abilities. Fortunately the market demands almost entirely Fender clones, and off the shelf bodies and necks of different wood, style and quality are widely available.

I did the paint and oil finishing, I did all the ageing of the paint and hardware and finishing kit (trade secrets, a couple of the techiques I invented myself), the assembly, wiring and final set up. My MO for purchasing the woodwork and doing everything else myself is pretty standard for all but the most boutique or specialist luthiers.
