just been to the road section and...

I find it all very strange. For starters blokes in lycra isn't good is it?

Secondly what's the point. If you want to ride a bicycle get the **** away from the Tarmac, the crazy drivers, psycho farmers on tractors and people in general, get out into the wilds and be surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells. Grab some air, drift it through corners, blah blah.

If you want to take a journey by road, use a motor car. They are so much faster.

The speed is addictive, and there's lots of handmade italian exotica ;)

But seriously, its just another way of enjoying old bikes, which can only be a good thing.

I ride a road bike to work every day.
But I don't consider myself a roadie, i just resent paying out £200 a month for fuel.
Since I started doing it I've been so much stronger on my Mtb.
I'm covering an extra 150 miles a week now instead of my pitiful 40 or so before and it shows.
Also I do have quite a cool route, over Pen-y-pass in Snowdonia twice a day!

I don't like doing it during the day though cos the cars seem to play "lets reassuringly touch his elbow with my mirror so he remembers to stay in the ditch."
However at night it's awesome, nothing quite like bombing it down the pass in moonlight., which works out half good for me because it's shift work.

Have to admit though, riding round here on a weekend or bank holiday is highly likely to end up looking something like that photo.

.

Very much the same for cars. Only much faster and much more exotic

Right Mr P, its voodoo magic as I stick pins in tyres chanting your name as you slog between Ardgay and Ullapool for that picture and accompanying comments

Anyhoo Si, Lycra was very common in Retro XC the baggy look came later.
Plus your feared of riding on tarmac cause of the traffic  What a big jessy

Nothing like a tarmac sprint for adrenaline rush although a scary off road descent is also the baws :D

Velo, Lycra arrived in XC racing in the late 80's when it became a (more) serious affair. The first XC races were done in cut down jeans or army trousers, t shirts and hiking boots.
Lycra clad groins do not belong on a mountain bike.
