Judy SL or XC??

Hi Guys thought you might be able to help me out with a query i have.

Picked up a bike tonight and was looking at the forks which have been badly painted black. I looked at the brace and removed it and it has yellow paint on it and underneath the brace is bright yellow paint which in my mind would indicate SL forks. Now is there anything else i can try to assist in figuring out if they are xc or sl forks and what the hell should i do with them cause they will need the paint striping down and painting again.

Hopefully one of you might be able to assist.

Cheers Stu

crown

It does have a hollowed out crown im pretty sure it is what i think it is, but want someone else to confirm this if that makes sense??

Try the bolts in the end of the legs or the brake bosses with a magnet - on an XC those parts are steel, on an SL they are titanium (non magnetic).

Also early (bolt on brace) SLs were always yellow, XCs were gold.

XC:
Cr-mo steerer tube
Cr-mo bolts
Non-adjusting damping-cartridge (this isn't always the case)

SL
Aluminium steerer
ti bolts in crown and bottom
Adjustable cartridge

And the coulour ofcourse, but that can be changed easily.

The early XC had adjustable dampers, didn't know they changed later on. In fact the same apart from the Alu steerer and Ti bolt, which followed on from the.

But Ti Bolts and Alu steer, colour is just superficial ;)

Look at the thickness of the steerer.

Really think walls - aluminium - SL

Thin walls (and prob some rust!!) - steel- XC

well......

Well had a look the bolts are ti and the steerer is alloy and under the ti bolts was more yellow paint. The only thing now is that instead of the normal elastomers was one in each leg in a bad state with springs and one was defo not from the fork.

Question is what should i do now with them? Sell them for spares or fix them up for a spare bike i have lying around?

Stuart

sell??

Well however had this bike before me has sprayed the legs black. You can see the yellow at the dropouts and around the bolts and the steerer is in good condition. I really fancy a set of z1 on this frame im building up. If your interested let me know and i can advertise them properly.
