Joe Waugh bikes.

I understand that Joe Waugh and Dave Yates branded frames and bikes were, back in the 80’s, sold via M Steel Cycles in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I have read that Dave Yates is credited with having built bikes with both names but his output must have been quite something if he is responsible for all of them.
Is a Waugh a Yates or were there other frames builders assisting him?

I don't know the answer, but I was measured up for mine by Dave himself and vaguely remember being asked which decals I wanted... DY/JW / MS. What I don't know is if serial numbers are different for the 3, or if they all just go sequentially regardless of the name on the frame. Probably best just to ask Dave!

I have a Dave Yates built Joe Waugh 753 frame with full MAVIC SSC groupset (I have the original receipt with frame geometry from Dave). The frame is superb in both its precise construction and ride quality. Kevin Winter is also credited as a frame builder for some Joe Waugh 753 frames by other owners on Retrobike- you can find with a search.

I have a Percy Bilton squad bike (loPro) which I was told was built by Dave for Paul Curran. I have no reason to doubt it as it is a very nicely built bike. It has a Reynolds Service de Course decal rather than a tubeset identifier on it. I am told that means it was built for professional squad.

I'm just after a Mavic 500/550 hub front tubular wheel with a Mavic GEL280 /330 32h rim and then every major component will be MAVIC bar the saddle (currently Record hub on Mavic Gel 280). Paint is original in specified Holdsworth Orange, white lined lugs, and with the delete Joe Waugh decals option.

I have a Joe Waugh frame built by Joe. I wanted a frame for life with race bike quality but mudguard clearance , over the bottom bracket cable guide and shoot in rear stays . I was told it would have " steels cycle " stickers by Joe (when cycling ) and the shop in gosforth . As Dave Yates ( workshop manger ) was chock a block build new 653 frames , Any thing with mudguard clearance, or off roady ,had Dave Yates or steel cycles on it . I popped in to the shop and was told "your frame is in col " . It looked magnificent in the blue I chose 💙. Then l was asked what stickers l wanted as , Joe had built the frame . Only one answer to that . Still have the frame. 1000001176.jpg
