Jack Taylor roadbike - worth saving?

Dirt Disciple
Hi all, I'm a first time poster here, my name is Dan and after lurking around on this site for a while, I wanted to post a couple of pictures of what I am hoping is going to be my first fixie project! (the topic of turning road bikes into fixed gear bikes appears to divide opinion on this site!)

I recently managed to get hold of an old Jack Taylor bike, I think its a Super Clubman. Hopefully the attached pics can be viewed in the next post (I've uploaded them to my album on here but can't put pics in my first post). I spotted it at a second hand bike charity back before Christmas. They had told me that the person who donated it said it belonged to his dad, who was 6'3'' and had the bike specifically built for him.

After agreeing to buy the bike and pick it up late Feb, the bike was unfortunately stolen from the bike yard. After revisiting the shop last week, it had reappeared in the yard as someone had luckily 'found' the bike next to the canalside and had sold it back to the shop.... After seeing it again I decided to buy it straight away and take it away!

There are a couple of issues with the bike that I wanted to ask on about here. The first is that there is a large crack on the back of the seat tube next to the clamping collar. Secondly, the bike looks like its been in a crash at some point as the forks are slightly bent rearwards. Perhaps more worryingly, the headset is slightly loose and whilst it may be nothing and just needs tightening, I'm a little worried that the headtube could be flared outwards (I do not have the bike with me down here in Bristol, I will be investigating this further soon).

I just wanted to ask that even with these issues, is it worth still trying to use the frame as a base for a project or should I start looking for something else?

Many thanks,
Dan

Pics hopefully attached...

Jack Taylor

Hi Dan
In my opinion any Jack Taylor is worth restoring. Even if it needed a new head tube.
Sounds like fate you got it eventually ;)
More info and pics when you get a chance as I'd love to see it and hear more of its story.
Cheers
Jamie

That crack in the seat tube looks a bit nasty and the forks are definitely bent back. You will need to take it to a frame builder for a thorough check up. It's a beautiful frame and definitely worth restoring but it won't be cheap. If you're looking for a fixie project this might not be the best frame.

Mark.

A must save job, but if it's a bit to pricey for the repairs, pass the frame on to someone who can get the repairs done...

Mike...

Thanks for the responses, sounds like it is worth hanging onto, glad I decided to pick it up!

I've uploaded a couple of extra pictures onto Flickr, hopefully they can be viewed:

The bike is in Coventry at the moment, when I go back up from Bristol I will try and get the forks off and have a look at the damage.

With regards to repairing the frame, can anyone recommend any places here in Bristol or in Coventry? Would anyone also know what the ballpark figure would be for a new set of forks and for the frame repairs? I picked up the bike for next to nothing and so if it costs ~£150 to straighten it out for example and the bike would be worth that when repaired, it would definitely make sense to do this.

Thanks,
Dan

please dont fixie it.
hard to tell but it looks like the down tube has gone as well at the top near the head tube on the weld.
take some more photos

It's not a weld but a fillet braze...much classier.

I would try Argos in Bristol. They aren't cheap but they do know what they are doing. You'll only get the work done once so it's worth doing properly.
