It seems that legendary framesmith Jack Taylor has passed away, at the ripe old age of 96. Funeral was Thursday in Stockton.

Re:

A long time ago, at the birth of mountain biking, my friend and I were out riding on or about the North Downs and dropped down into Otford to a little cafe just off the the duck-house roundabout, and outside was a cluster of touring bikes leant up against the wall. (the cafe is not there now, I just checked on Googly Maps)
At the top of this pile was a Jack Taylor tandem which my friend and I ogled at.
In no time the owner came out wanting to know what "you kids are up to?"
He was taken quite aback that we were not loutish MTB bike thieves, but in fact in awe of his bike. I said I had never seen a Taylor in the flesh and commented upon the lugwork and coachlining.

We parted on friendly terms and he went back in the cafe to join his friends. Obviously we waited till he was out of sight and nicked it then.

The last part of that was made up by the way.

Yes, very sad news indeed.
Made some very beautiful machines over the years.
Rest In Peace

Very sad news, one of my older friends from Stockton knew all three brothers whilst growing up.
He said he was a true gentleman.
Another great frame builder and legend of the cycling world gone.
Rest In Peace Jack.
