I've learned something today.......

I will take a picture of the bottle with caustic soda we have in the Netherlands. Its in Dutch but I will try to translate.

When I did this my method was to have two bowls, one with the Caustic Soda solution in it and one with cold water.

Then dip the item in the CS solution, for about 10 seconds, then plunge it in the cold water. This stops the reaction. You can then inspect it and see how much and is off and how much is still left. Then repeat until the Ano is gone.

You are aiming to get to the point where the Ano is just removed before it starts eating the metal.

In my experience a minute or two would be way too long. It would only need 2 or 3 dips - and that was a similar item - middleburn spider.

obviously doesn't help the OP....but might help someone else!

Re:

It's all by its scientific name Sodium Hydroxide. I use and handle it all the time. Yes it's in most soap but that's neutralised to some extent by other things.

It is also used to neutralise Hydrochloric acid which is used to strip the white stuff of Oranges and all sorts.

But it's irrelevant in this context and so is using it for drains.
Your adding aluminium and aluminium oxide to a warm sodium hydroxide mix. It's warm already, as just adding it to water generates a lot of heat. Then adding aluminium creates a vast bubbling as hydrogen is created (so I would advise not having a fag nearby ;-) )
The hotter the liquid the faster it works.

You should never really add water to the solid as it can eject itself and that's never a good idea.

For anyone thinking of using it often, get some citric acid and cat litter while your at it.Cat litter is an excellent cheap absorbent for mopping up spills of it, while citric acid can be used to neutralise spills etc.

Anyway safety talk, now it's been screwed up, look at fitting helicoils to create a new thread to bolt in to.

According to this
8xO.75mm is the chainring bolt standard

Or perhaps some threadlock my fill the small gap, but not sure if I would risk it.

Live and learn and good for others to take note :)

Re:

Adding it to hot water can cause instantaneous boiling and it flying out if what ever it is contained in. It's very nasty / fumes can cause burns.

As for the spider you can use inner and outer chainring bolts to hold it on, like the outer ring. Denying on the size of the hole you can either use the in we or outer bolt through the spider. You will need chainring washer to fill the gap.
If it's eroded that much then it's probably not safe to use anyway.

You could use single (BMX) chainring bolts and omit the spacers.
