and I climbed them hills on a road bike 39t front but being a newbie to the 700c brigade I don't know what the rear block is

A 17% climb , on a first gear of 39 x 23! Proper hard riding, right there!

Pfff, unless it's a 42x21 up a 20%, you have no bragging rights!

I could easily have used the 21, the other day I finished the climb on the 17. Didn't want to snap either the chain or the bolt

I'm usually more worried about snapping my knees
