ISIS bottom brackets

I only own and ever used square taper bbs, but considering using one.

Are they appropriate for a retro build? What year did they start being used?

Re:

early 2000's I think. They're nice, until they brake and corrode in a way Shimano square taper never did.

Bit shite in my not used them for many miles over the past 5 years but seem to only last one wet winter each time.
Used Race Face and some other brands.

The only way they could squeeze in the fatter axle inside was to undersize the bearings. Regardless of brand they last less long than equivalent square taper.

Personally I wouldn't spend money on something that's a turkey of a design, but up to you.

Re:

Bearings are tiny, seals are shite, usually last about 5 minutes, stick with square taper.

Re:

All of the above..

I also found that the crank bolts tended to loosen on any that I used. Definitely stick with the square taper :)

Re:

A solution for a problem that never existed. Horrible fail. Useless crap. Don’t even bother.

I've honestly never had issues with decent ISIS bottom brackets. Have an FSA with like 10k miles on it, that is the nicer four bearing model though.

Just don't buy anything Truvativ, or Raceface SRX and you're fine. All the FSA ones are good in my experience, better Raceface ones too.

There is some truth to the crank bolts coming loose because the arms fit poorly. You have to try that specific crank/bb combo. Some will slide right on, you don't want that. Needs to have a slight press fit, similar to octalink.

Re:

As above, worth buying a good one, but that's true of most things.

Depending on your bb shell.size and required axle length, I've got a brand new fsa platinum pro titanium mega quad ISIS bb I dont need. Rrp was over £100 but I no longer have any isis cranks so if you need one, and it's the right size for your needs, £30 is all I want for it, which is much less than I paid but it's just gathering dust.

I've used crank bros ones in the past and they were good.

With other bb types, you get good and bad ones. Race face ht style ones aren't very long lasting unless you go top end, some cheapy easy ht2 bbs are better.
