yes, very old bit of tech, think vintage rather than retro. they aren't all that common and I don't think they were back then. Not much in the way of light is cast by them and it was a pretty short overlap between bicycle for the masses and electricity (20 years ish) so you can see why they weren't that common.

You can imagine as you picked up speed on your High Bicycle, the clamp starting to bind, the lamp starts spinning in your wheel, you pick up speed due to the almost total lack of brakes... it only ends one way
I found i couldn't hold the speed down on a penny on a 10% gradient, and had to crash deliberately into a parked car to avoid calamity.
