Is this a good idea? Big race on old bike.

go for it,a brand new bike may fail so a trusted old steed thats worked reliable may be the better option

Not the same style of race but I often use my old 1988 bear valley for the London to Brighton races.

As long as preventitive servicing like the forks etc have been done to reassure your piece of mind then go for it and good luck

Whats the problem here. . .
Just get out there and race it & stop worring!!!

The bike will be fine.
Just do the normal checks before you start. . . fit a new chain & gear cables & make sure that the headset, & wheelbearings are well greased & adjusted & that everything is tight & secure, oh & check the brake pad thickness. . . then just go out there & enjoy yourself.

Ive done literally hundreds of races over the UK & Europe - XC, DH & enduro & when i think about some of the crappy old bikes ive raced, it makes yours look like the MTB equivalent of a Rolls Royce.
They'll be peeps there with better bikes than yours. . . but your bike will be better than most, so whats the problem.

Get out there & give it some stick dude. . . the bike deservs it !!! :D
