Is this a bodge?

ditch the starfangled nut and put an expanding topcap in there (like the hope head doctor or other) that way you can periodically tighten the extender and then no harm will come to you or the bike.

imho.

Only issue I can think of is that the upper headset race may be slightly out of alignment due to the extension not being perfectly inline with the steerer tube.

This would be my concern :?

I don't think you will pull the thing out, or we would all be pulling our quil stems out

Ah but when tightening the top cap you are directly pulling on the quill.....that was my thinking anyway....

Now I think about it there probs more upwards force when you pull a wheelie so quill should be safe :)

Of course now you have an SFN in there you are never getting that quill adapter back out! (or be able to tighten it!).

I have a V12 Jaguar, there is nothing I can't drill out given enough spare batteries and bits!

Seriously though this is a great point, I have gone and bought a Hope Head doctor as suggested by another poster and have got my smallest 3 leg puller to extract the star fangled nut after I weaken the 'arms' of it with a few well placed 1.5 mm holes!

On the point of the race being out I am using a Cane Creek SC1 ahead unit which has cartige bearings which are kind of self centering, also the upper head race does sit on the threaded part of the steerer, and there fore will be as in line with the bottom race as any bike surely?

Thanks for the feeback though, a few good points that I have taken on board. I rode it today and she feels fine and no ill effects. :D

use a headset top race with a wedged collar this will self centere
the bearing cups ,i think cane creek ones are like this

what i do is drill the m8 bolt in the quill and tap 4mm by about 15mm deep then thread a long 6mm cap screw 4mm to thread into quill
bolt and use this in the same way as a SFN thus pre-loading the head set
its been like this for about 4 years and only ever gets ridden off road
