I think once the market starts to actually understand that a very big proportion of customers are not the size of an average man but shorter and smaller it can make a difference for 26" wheels. They just fit small people better
even on road/touring/etc bikes the frame geometries would make much more sense in sizes 40-50cm if they had 26" wheels. some manufacturers have started making smaller sizes with 650b and a few even with 26es but its not widely out there yet
and as for mountain bikes in general i think 26" DH rigs and 26" dirt bikes will make a comeback at some point =)
