Is the price of parts putting you off?

Another part of the equation buying individual parts vs a complete bike is the logistics / delivery cost.

Figures from La Poste:
250 gram = 4.95 €
15 Kg = 26.40 €

So, x 5 individual parts purchased roughly the same as a complete bike. It is eye watering where the money is going.
Yeah, the price of postage has made selling decent but not very expensive bikes difficult. I always used to price my stuff including postage but don't any more.

Some stuff has defo gone up in price since the old days but it's mainly the desirable, high end stuff. 10 years ago M900 could be picked up for reasonable money, as could a Yo Eddy or Bollox but they've increased so much that they are way out of my reach. I let a personal Unicorn go (mk1 GT RTS1) due to the fact I realised I was never going to be able to do the build justice, where as I've had quite a few M900 based bikes in the past.

Saying that, I don't think much outside the top stuff has gone silly. Yeah, some full, restored bikes are twice what they used to be but you can still find M730/2/5 equipped bikes for sub £200 and a decent Deore DX groupset doesn't seem to be that much more these days? There are still plenty of bargains out there and you don't even have to look too hard.
Yo Eddys always commanded tall prices and were offered 7 days a week. I bought a Wicked and rode into the sunset. I would buy an Ibis or Salsa at a better price than a Yo and still hav an iconic great handling 26in vintage mtb. Now everything is overpriced due mostly to hype: vintage hype, handmade hype, steel hype. Just sit and wait the newcomers get bored w/ their 26in and buy from them.

Maybe I am being put off after all - well I may be if the prices of some things I'm targeting don't stop going crazy.

Take the the Tioga Disc Drives on eBay right now for example (note I'm not chasing one of these), there's one up for auction which has hit a high price and still has days to, and a second that has been listed with an even higher starting price - which must have people hovering over the make offer button if the trajectory of the other auction item is anything to go by.

I've seen a couple of sets NOS Bullseye cranksets fly off the shelf at $1500-$1800, again not chasing these, but I like to watch them if they come up.

I've got an auction sniper set up for something I want, and today I had to raise my max price as it felt like what I had previously set wouldn't be enough in the end, and sure enough the price has already passed my initial limit - will it pass my next?? If it does, am I out, or do I raise it again??

🤔 🤔 🤔

I guess I probably miss the inflated prices as it seems to affect the top end stuff the most and I don't really follow exotica.

My point on Yo's stands though, you used to be able to get original and clean frame/forks for £500/600 and full bikes for sub £1000. You need to double that now.

As for waiting for the newbies to get bored and sell on, good luck. I've been on here a good long while now and seen the regular posters come and go with another always ready to take their place. Same happened with retro Tamiya RC except 10 or so years earlier and prices of those are still rising.

Go for it, I remember I bought a set of 1210’s back in 2008/9 from a banker who had lost his job for 200ish pounds. Today I would need to put 3/4 times that amount. I held out on a mixer and speakers I wanted when they were dirt cheap on ebay. They have now tripled in price- predicting the future on said items is impossible, do you want to spend more of your life clicking on auction websites or riding your bike?

Well...I raised my max bid again to what I thought would surely be a safe number. Nope, got out bid in the last moment buy someone who clearly wanted the item that little bit more than me, with them securing it at the next price increment above my max price - but of course who knows what their max was.
I can make do for now, so I shall be patient! 😤🙄🙃

Im obviously so out of touch on prices for just about everything! Glad im not the only one who's struggling with the cost in both psychological and physical hard cash terms!

Absolutely over priced*. That doesn't mean a quality known condition set will not sell for that. So they are worth more then a picture and someone not taking them apart.
They are a wanted fork, and people building JMC replicates seem happy to pay money. Which these forks are often bought for.

*they were over priced when new!
And they are still less than the new price, relatively speaking.

Good luck, lovely looking condition.
(I would suggest they may actually sell at that price or a little less)
