Is Modern Better Than Retro?

Interesting re bike inflation, just a data point, I'm not bothered to be fair, I like old bikes!

https://www.evanscycles.com/coffeestop/ ... -15-years/

Thm rationale for thinking modern cars are "better" holds for bikes too I reckon

But just to comfirm I like old bikes. This is retrobike right?

Some dudes like old cars

Some dudes like old women, but that's a different story. Rooney!

I dont feel safe in old cars (pre airbags) apart from old Mercs and Volvos/ SAABS

I feel fine with old bicycles though.

But not old women.

Re:

Just a thought , will all these modern bikes ( 29" 27.5" fat bikes and so on ) still be around in 20 years time ????????

Re:

Depends what is considered Retro.

At a given price point, S/H is much better than new, but whether that stretches to the point of up to date being inferior to high end at the same price from a few years past is a difficult call.

If a good, say, Ti frame with 'modern' geometry (but still considered Retro) is being compared to a recent similar geometry basic steel frame, I would guess that the Ti frame is more desirable to most.

Re:

Thought he was too dismissive of retro tech. Doubt modern top end bikes, properly used, will be around in 20 yrs. Too fragile. Soon they will be all electric, chainless, infinite gearing, all mechanicals internalised etc and capable of even more speed though the forests but.... there will be a bunch of silver hairs on patrol with speed guns, rigidly enforcing 15mph limits.

They will, and be cherished and restored by the next generation of retro riders.I remember in the 90s there were guys in 1960s MGs and Triumphs and they said the same about Escorts,Cortinas etc.

Re:

Any bike is only ever as good as the chump sat on top.

For your 'average' rider modern bikes are better, mostly because they enable shit bike handlers to ride stuff that was scary as hell for most of us back in the day.

We are not average riders are we?

Well I'm not because I've not ridden a bike for months!!

Anyway they are a good way of picking people out, just like if you were at a bar waiting to be served and a bloke walked up with a Subaru jacket or Ferrari baseball cap on... It's a warning not to enter into a conversation at any cost.

al.

Thats it then, im off to ebay to find a subaru jacket to go with my harley davidson branded jacket and super dry jacket.
