Is it wrong to ride old?

If it were me, I'd take some of the more esoteric parts off it, and buy some slightly less special ones (Deore is fine), then get out and enjoy it. Keep it clean, apply lots of waxoyl inside the tubes.

but at this point the bike is like a member of my family and I don't want to abuse it. However, considering I am a few months out of grad school and terribly poor (try living within the constraints of the American economy) I really can't invest in a new ride right now.

Input please and thanks in advance.

Riding does not have to equal abusing or trashing.

The bike has been used in the past by you and there's no reason why it can't be used again as it is. Just treat it with a little respect on the trails and you'll be fine. Treat it as a fair weather friend if required. :)
