Is it too soon

Re:

I agree with retrobikeguy....1991!

I am currently restoring a 91 MuddyFox Alu Pro that I've had since 91.
I wish I never changed the original parts!

Those steel beauties, which are made from around '96 to early 00s, the suspension corrected, V-brake compatible XC frames I like the most. Couldn't care less about newer standards, disc brakes, integrated headsets, wider O.L.D., tapered headtube (or is it fork?), eccentric/ISIS BBs, etc. I'm firmly stuck in the square taper/rim brake universe, period.

The team steel frames of the era in 19" size weigh under the 2 kg mark, some of them are even way lighter but still reliable (if easy to get the tubes dented). True Temper, Tange, Dedaccai, Columbus & Reynolds were at the top of their game back then and I try to keep 1-2 fine specimen made from their high-end steel tube offerings of that period.

In fact, recently I do not buy/keep anything which does not fit these criterias. They're a dying breed anyway, as they won't be recreated (without spending a fortune) due to strict regulations and the lack of availability in decent/NOS condition.

Without nostalgia it might be this decade and year but I bought my first MTB in 1992 and my first full sus. in1997. I vote, therefore, for the 90s as best decade and 1997 as the best year ever. It was the year when full suspension came of age with good and affordable designs. FYI in '92 it was a Diamondback Sorrento and '97 a Marin Rift Zone.

Decade: 1980's - you could go cycling without feeling threatened or that everything was monetised and one bike was pretty much all you needed (along with a road bike)

Or maybe the 90's, it was a nice colourful decade to cycle in

Year: 1993 - I bought my Zaskar

80’s for me... started them as a 12yr old and did more riding in those 10 years than the next 40 combined...
Road, touring, cycle cross & grass track...
