Is it just me or is XC racing on TV really boring?!?

Excuse my rant but I've had a couple of glasses of wine

Just been watching some XC racing on one of the cable channels... Strikes me as a little on the boring side, I mean the course was 15% road to start with and the rest was not what I'd call technical. Also the riders (whom I knew hardly any of) seem kinda boring too, none of the characters like JT or Tinker Juarez from BITD, they all just look like road racers. Maybe it's 'cos I've not paid much attention to the XC scene over the past 10 years or something but I can see why DH and 4X are so much more popular.

Sorry about that but my g/f is watching Sex and the City so I couldn't rant to her + she wouldn't know what the hell I was on about... The End

Yes it is very boring. I can't be bothered. However, I haven't watched any sporting event on TV since the 70's, not a single one. Go out to a local race and watch (after racing yourself), that can be fun.

it became boring as the americans were surpassed. not to be anti-european, but americans are a naturally theatrical people - when successful at something, they find it second-nature to construct a character around that success.

it is no coincidence that missy giove wasn't swiss.

maybe thats what it is. even towards the end of tomacs career he was waay down the field at 1 of the later world cups in newnham park, but while the euro winner was already on the podium there was still a massive crowd waiting purely to watch tomac bomb down "the pipeline" 1 last time :)

years later watching the euros fully bigring the newnham park course in a totally joyless way... well thats when I lost interest!

I agree...now.

But 10 to 15 years ago, I use to really enjoy watching the NORBA videos...perhaps cause they were more highlights oriented...oh, and had a couple of the people mentiond above.

I prefer riding than watching sport at TV. In France, you could know all what you want about football, F1, and cyclism on rad (Tour de France). A newspaper like "l'Equipe" in France don't speak about Vouilloz, Chausson, or Absalon. On TV, It's the same thing : "Moutain Biking ? What is it ? Excuse-me but we prefer to show (boring) Tour de France. or football "
?

So, when I could see a few second of moutain biking on TV, I'm happy !
Perhaps, the race are boring, but I remember to have see the olympic race at Athenes, with helicopter, camera everywhere… 3 hours of enjoying… :) :

:D so true. In fact it's true for life in general.

I watched some mid-90`s stuff the other week and it was all good stuff...I couldnt comment on modern riders as I dont have a clue but the riders had characters back then that you followed ... Bit like F1 ??
