still not 100% its a zaskar then? but do you think its worth starting as a 1st retro build? i have a couple of newer konas i ride but my first mountain bikes was a early steel gt timberline and did the mary townelel on a hardtail gt and kind of have a soft spot.

what do you recommend?

its pretty much a Panteraskar or a Zaskera

I'd say is a 50/50 chance to be a Zaskar. Could it be Pantera AL as well. Without S/N you can't really tell.

Except wasn't the Pantera U-brake and Zaskar are all v-brake/canti?

Both my Zaskars have been U brake (90 & 92).

Yep pretty much all the triple triangle GTs used U-brakes on the rear due to heel clearance problems with wide profile cantis up until 1992.

1993 saw GT ditch the U-brake because the newer low-profile cantis solved the heel clearance issue.

So assuming the bike in question has U-brake mounts, which it appears to have, then that dates it no later than 92, and as we know the 1992 Pantera also had a flat end cap on the top tube.

So yes it's 50:50 Zaskar/Pantera.

I'd hack off that ugly disc mount, build it up and call it a Paskera.
