Am I right in thinking that without an adapter on the front or rear, the largest discs I could fit to IS tabs (the brakes have IS tabs as well) are 160mm on the front and 140mm on the rear?

Re:

If you are not using any adapters yes the disc size is linked to the caliper size but there are IS-IS+20mm (and +40) adapters available if you did want to increase the rotor size.

Re:

Something like this, from A2Z or hope allows you to increase the size on IS frame/fork and IS caliper.

thanks for the replies. I have a pair of 1999 Diatech mechanical disk brakes I fancied fitting, but the disc sizes they came with are 140mm and 185mm. they also are IS tabs on them. I could only find one site that confirmed what you've confirmed.

https://www.analogcycles.com/true-facts ... -adapters/

If you have the discs and corresponding brakes there is no reason you cannot fit the diatech brakes you have (assuming the discs mount onto the wheel in the same way) The only bit that can be fiddly when setting up IS Calipers is to centralise them you have to use thin washers between the mount and the caliper otherwise they can rub.
