Got a frame that require forks at around 410mm axle to crown and was wondering if anybody could let me know if jumping up to around 420-425 axle to crown would have a noticeable negative impact on steering and also, most importantly, would it add more stress around the headtube? I always hear horror stories about that. I am a pretty heavy rider at around 300 pounds.

Geometry wise.....bugger all....rule of thumb is 25mm is roughy 1 degree off the head tube angle...so touch slacker......at 10 to 15mm, doubt you would tell on a new setup.

Yes, it does increase the force on the steerer, bearings and headtube, but again negligible compaired to womping the front wheel off a 4' drop off!

Obviously, it all adds up, but it depends on material, build quality, your weight etc as to if its going to be an issue......if its a reasonable quality steel frame.....I'd do it and not even think about it. But, that's the nature of choice and risk.

It's a Surly frame, so I am not worried about it not being sturdy enough, but was wondering as I've looked at different fork options online. I've got a fork that's a wee bit under the recommended a2c, about 5mm less or so, which should do the trick. Just wanted to know what my options were in case I decided to change it up once in a while. I don't really ride any brutal terrains, mostly flat singletrack, fireroads and a fair bit of gravel. Sounds like I can safely go for a slightly longer a2c as well then, should I get that urge.

Appreciate the input, Tootyred.
