Incorrect crank bolts

Hi all, hope you can help me out:

Picked up a new project at the weekend; (Overbury's road frame & Shimano 600 groupset) pics in readers road bikes. Hope my query is relevant here though.

The Shimano cranks (as with most cranks i have ever used) are designed to take a 14mm crank bolt. Somehow, these cranks have been secured using Italian 15mm bolts. Problem I have is finding a 15mm socket that is actually fine enough to fit into the recess of the crank arm itself while still fitting the bolt head.

Any ideas?

Look for thin socket sets is all I can offer - I think I used a Hlafrauds Pro for the last set of 15mm bolts

*yes, its in the special tools pile next to my BB tools, its a standard Halfords socket 15mm, a tight squeeze but it fits.

I did buy a draper socket today, because I thought it looked suitably thin. Unfortunately it's WAY too big. I'll take it in to Halfords and compare with theirs.

See if your local bloke in a shed (old school bike shop) has one.

I know i've got a double sided AND double ended crank bolt spanner somewhere downstairs, both metric sizes and two imperial. Think it might be from VAR, but haven't seen it for a couple of years, so not 100% sure!

I know just the man locally. The cranks are in great shape, so don't want to trash them. Doesn't look like there is a miracle solution to removing them, so will leave it to local magician.

Only miracle to it is having the right tool. Turning down a socket is a good bodge, but might end messily.

And i bet it's all but impossible to buy the right tool these days........

Icetoolz do a nice 14/15 mm socket, cheap and it takes off poedals too ....

*think* I have a ground down one somewhere that would work (probably), depending how patient you want to be for me to find it, you could call in and pick it up next week on your way through to home? Failing that, my old bike shop boss will have the right tool I expect in his garage, and I'm doing his garden tomorrow....will try and find it if I remember, then you could try both.

That looks like it will do the job perfectly, I'll check my local branch tomorrow - have a day off work, so can go on a mission
