Right...so...

After pretty much finishing my 2005 Kona Dawg build I pedal it up the road and it turns out the rigidity of the pivots was completely down to the fact it had seized in position due to lack of use.

A few strokes and it’s clear it needs major pivot/bushing service!

Any recommendations/info on the kits I need?

I looked at BETD but they don't seem to have a kit for Konas. If you measured the bearings you could get them from a local bearing supplier for very little. I've used BRT bearings in Chorley where I live. They have a few branches but there are thousands of bearing suppliers. I even got a PB10 spherical bearing from Brt for my Whyte JW4.

TBH although I’ve got a few full sussers as I don’t cover mega miles and split riding between several bikes I’ve never actually had to replace bearings and bushes.

As such I’m not sure what majorly impact the pivots?

Is it usually the bearings that have the biggest effect or the bushes or both?

There’s a lot of play in the linkage so gut feeling is refurb the whole lot?

Bushes seem hardy to find...?

P.s. I only paid £60 for the F&F so the re-furb will cost disproportionately more than it should but it’ll last until it perishes.

I know the kit could cost £100 but want the right one!

Which pivots have play? The lil bushings right above the rear wheel quick release can go bad, or they will also have play if they are loose.

The eyelet bushing for the rear shock often goes bad and the bolt is usually bent.

Those 2 issues are the most common & by far the least expensive. Otherwise the cartridge bearings seam to last for quite a while.

The ones behind the BB are doubled up, 2 per side. Can be a bear to remove.

Cheers for the response, major play in the large pivots near the bb.

Gut feeling is replace the whole lot just so it’s done.

The pivot and bush kit is £99 so add bearings and labour and it’s not a cheap job.

I do feel it should be rescued though...

Yes it should be rescued. Between my friends and I we've had 10 Dawgs of various years. Great bikes. If possible you might want to try and remove the bolt for those bb bearings. If the play is to extreme it can damage the pin and in some cases the frame. You'll want to confirm the bearings are shot but haven't seized to the point they've eaten into the frame. Once that's confirmed go for it. Not cheap but it'll last you a loooong time with new bearings.
