Immovable freewheel?

Just come back from Cycle Surgery who gave up trying to remove a freewheel from a Teny rim i got on ebay. The wheel is useless to me without getting it off.. anyone recommend a workshop for such a stubborn fitting in London? Otherwise i'll just keep trying more random bike shops. But they told me they sheared one of their tools trying to remove it to no avail...

Well assuming that the first shop took proper precautions before attempting to loosen the freewheel then seem like the freewheel is just permanently affixed. No harm in trying another, and in the mean time you could try to get some penetration oil into the threads.

What sort of freewheel is it? If the freewheel is scrap and it's the wheel that you actually want out of this, then tap off the face plate of the freewheel, remove the sprockets, balls and pawl/springs. You'll probably notice a couple of 'flats' where the pawls sat. Get those flats clamped in a vice and twist the wheel off. I used to do this if the splines/notches were too worn for a freewheel tool to grip onto.

What he says^^^ but a note of caution and I dont wish to imply foolishness but is it definitely a freewheel or is it a freehub ?

If it's a freewheel then try the method I suggested. If it's a HG freehub and you are trying to remove the cassette then all you need to do is carefully grind 2 cuts along the face of the lockring. That should be enough to free the lockring.

Don,t go crazy with the big bars as you may crack ther hub

No need to ask how i know that.

Are you sble to hack/grind the sprockets or hub off?

Thanks all yes it is a threaded freewheel and it's the wheel (5 spoke mag) that i want to keep. I was wondering if i'd be able to carefully cut the thing off if i removed the sprockets etc.. i'll prob try another shop or two and lay them the gauntlet of getting it off. Otherwise i might have to invest in a dremel?

I've had a similar issue with my old road bike's wheel, I had to remove (unscrew) the sprockets with two chain tool, after I had to disassemble the freewheel mechanism. After that I gripped the remaining base of the freewheel with a very long and sturdy tube plier and successfully screwed off from the wheel.
