Why would a rusted frame be a feature? I saw copper plated and then intentionally oxidised but just leaving your frame out in rain? Nah.

Way back when we used to rust bonnets (it was a thing in the vw scene). We used to rust them woth patterns in, it was patina but it wasn't real.
Having said that, we also lace painted a roof that got called patina, beicae the vw scene is weird.

Yeah I've seen a few bikes get that treatment as well. I'd bet There's significant overlap between the VW and rat rod bike community. Just followed a guy building this last year:
