I hope that the engineer could look at it more positively. Would it be better for that bike to be gathering dust unused in a corner until it gets binned, or would an engineer be charmed by the lengths people went to make it useful, comfortable, extend it's intended use, perhaps even love it?

Sorry mate, I have to disagree. I have no problem with and really like modification and re purpose. That Cervelo is an abortion in my eyes.
