to me he is a true legend of the bike industry and racing. To other's he's a byline in history. he did what others couldn't though and I hope that sort of spirit never goes away. anyone who can get up the nose of the UCI from a tiny corner shop is a legend to me.

Full agree. An utter hero as a cyclist, mechanic and just a plain old human being. He had his faults too, but excelled in sheer bloody mindedness and a sound approach to problem solving within constraints.
Glad I witnessed it all in my lifetime, and although I would like to see something like that again, I doubt it will be repeated.
