That particular frame design and construction looks totally inadequate for off-roading. I have no idea about how they held up back in the day, but I certainly would be nervous on it considering it's age too. I guess if a vintage mixed tandem with a step-through for the stoker, then something like these would be better choice. :

I can see how tempting it is to do a resto-mod, vintage tandems are such a speciality thing are very cheap price wise because storage and transport is such a PITA. Chances are in this day and age the stoker doesn't actually care about cocking her leg over a crossbar either - more hipster than sensible again :rolleyes:
