Identify the Raleigh

Retro Newbie
Hey guys,

I've just picked up an old school Raleigh Road frame, not totally sure of the date or model, but wondered if anyone
had any suggestions. My gut feeling is its could be a 60's Lenton model, but thats a total guess.

It's got the Lock barrel built into the fork, and look's liked it had red and gold tramlines running along the frame,
it also has "Raleigh All Steel Bicycle" labels and a "high tensile steel tubing" label. all pictured below (hopefully).

any information or suggestions would be great, also any ideas on the BB type, and decent replacements for it
would be great. Sorry if I'm seeming totally clueless (pretty much am), but this is my first retro bike projectso its a
steep learning curve.

Many thanks as every guys!.

Thanks for that Ian,
just hoping to track down the appropriate parts and transfers for a good rebuild,
but difficult to start when your not totally sure how it should look.

Sheldon Brown's site has information on raleigh's weird bottom brackets, they're wider and different threaded.

A modern type sealed square taper cartridge is available that's designed not to use the BB threads. The raleigh bb being wider won't bother the fitment, but loctite will give peice of mind either way.

Of course anoraks will be upset that it's not cotter pins, but anoraks can do one

Thanks for the info guys,

and yeah hamster, i was shocked by that, and the fact the fork-lock has the key and works properly,
not bad for £10. just hoping i can do it justice.

I thought Lenton myself...

Made in the day when steel was king and maybe not such a dirty word in today's cycling vocabulary.

I did think Lenton when i first got it, but can't find any other examples with the same colour scheme, the nearest
match i've been able to find is the Dawn Tourist and Sport Tourist from the late 30's early 40's, but it's difficult
to say for sure.
Either way love the thing and cant wait to get it built up.

Right then Steve!

Asked around and been advised it could be an early (30s/40s) Record Ace.

Certainly pre-dates my time on this planet (I've been around since '75) - I only ever remember the heron logo, although Sir Walter was still a company trademark up until the mid 50s or so; Alan Sillitoe made a passing reference to him being used in Raleigh shop window displays in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.
