Ideas on how to get rid of the brifters ?

hang on - aren't they singles, I need the nubs on both sides - and to fit a steel frame from the late 70s early 80s - although it's 122mm rear spacing, so springing it out to 126mm/ 7 speed shouldn't be a problem

As I said, there are others available with two cable slots.

I bought a few of these Huret double band on bosses to convert older bikes to STI's (though reverted back to band on friction shifters on one in any case)
Got a new one if interested, accepts the std downtube adjusters or Shimano DT levers directly though the M5 screw doesn't fit as the threading is different. I never found out what exactly as I just dug out some random threaded bits from my tub.
