ID help needed, early West Coast Cdn content

as i mentioned to Steve prior to him posting, it's a weird mix of Rocky and Kona attributes. the rear stays style and the forward facing binder looks like 80's Kona:

But the extended seat tube screams Rocky (like an Avalanche or Blizzard):

Did he say he bought it complete?

Looking at the components (DX with U brake), I'm saying 1990-1991 Rocky Mountain ??????

Almost all RMs went away from U-brakes and down tube cabling in 1991 and onward. Only one that could possible come close is the 1991 Fusion, which still had the U-brake in the back and downtube cabling. But from the catalogue it has a rear facing binder, no rear cable noodle, and no where near the length of extension on the seat tube.

Actually, it could be an Aquila. I bought a beater bike for the Tange Struts that looked a lot like a Rocky Mountain Blizzard. Took me a while to sort out it was an Aquila and they used the same Japanese frame builder as Rocky to build their frames in the early 90s. They kitted them out with LX and DX components and sold them in Canada. They were built with lower end tubing and the geometry is nearly identical to the blizzard.

This is about a 1992:

Did some more googling, and again, close but no cigar.. http://www.mombat.org/MOMBAT/Bikes/1991 ... hance.html

Quote;
1991 Team Fat Chance

I've not seen any printed information about this model so most of this is based on stories that we have been told plus some semi-educated guesses. This was a Taiwanese built, Canadian assembled bike that was specifically designed for the Canadian market. The low slung frame with the extended seat tube is a style favored by the Canadian market. This may have also been a test to see if their was interest in an imported Fat Chance bike. It would have been a much smaller risk to the Fat Chance reputation to have a bike fail in Canada than in the US. Since they weren't imported into the US, I am guessing that the experiment was deemed a failure. Rumor has it that Chris Chance was never particularly fond of these bikes

Possibility, as it does have an early West Coast connection

Not Rocky or a Kona. You can tell by looking at it. Brodie influence. But not a Brodie.

The whole front end is a 1990 Rocky Blizzard from a quick look at it.
Only the rear stay to fast back and sliding dropoputs change it.

Given the seller says they had people alter frames for this and than, sound pausible they had the rear end altered or made up like this for whatever reason.
?

Orsomebody used the design to create some test bikes.
Serial iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis definatly the imported japanese frames of the 1991 models (but mid 1990 would be possible ?)

I love these kinds of threads!

I agree with Frank; that seat tube is totally Rocky and since it's not a wishbone, it would have to be '89 or older.

This pic from the '89 catalog looks really close, with U-brakes on the top of the seatstays and it says the Tantalus/Thunderbolt can be brazed or TIG welded.

However, the seatpost binder is on the right side of the frame, and the cables are all on top, just like this '88.

Those could be custom features, but that long serial number and the dropouts make feel like a lower end bike.

What about that rear brake cable routing though? Who used a noodle AND that seatstay bridge?

I don't see that on any Rockys or Brodies.

Re:

Just for curiosity's sake, a couple more pictures (I finally learned how to post pics using my smartphone). I still haven't got a clue what it is, pretty much given up on it.

Re:

Yellow is a rocky colour of course
I9002 is a rocky farmed out coding and would date the frame Feb 1990 so likely a 1990 frame rather than a made for 91 season.
