Rock Shock were definitely the leaders in the early 90s, right up there in terms of technical specification and function with the air / oil designs. MAG 21 has to be definitive one, Judys bought great performance to the masses and should be one of the top ones too.

The Pace RC35 is a fair fork, allowing any frame to have a bit of suspension and yes the carbon is very snazzy, but it is just too basic really to be 'important'. I like how it looks and rides, but it is nothing special.

In my opinion, it is Fox with the Float and F series forks that really were game changers for the industry. Lighter, stiffer and brilliant performance, means that even with the ridiculous price they command now they sell like hot cakes. A bit too late (2002 - ?) to be retro though
