I want a helmet cam

i got a helmet cam, haven't used it since last year, but i've had 2 different ones, i had been using a normal camcorder with an extra camera mounted to my helmet with a 9volt battery that transmitted the image to a signal box with it's own power source which was then plugged into the camcorder. it worked pretty well but you have to change the batteries quite often coz when they start to wear out and it massively affects the picture quality. it was quite light overall and wasn't restrictively big or anything.
the second one i had plugs straight into the camcorder just with an external power source but it's wired but the picture is so much better but with the wire it can get in the way a bit but it is so much easier to mount to stuff, i find helmet mount is a bit dull coz your head doesn't lean when you corner, if you mount the camera on your bike you see the affects of leaning so much more, under the saddle is good, you get to see forks going up and down, looks cool.

madison do a helmet cam for a bit over £130 and they are supposed to be quite good, i know a guy who works at a local jessops camera shop and he helped me with my system (haven't got a clue about the model etc) but the footage i have is pretty good from the alps etc.

hey tintin, i did try it in traffic one evening to see how it was at night, got cut up by a knob in a car, chased the sod down to the next traffic light, went mental at him and pointed out the camera on my helmet, he cacked his pants!!!

i will be putting some footage on youtube at somepoint but i bought the software to sort it all out but i'm having trouble with the system at the mo. the system being me, coz i'm crap with technology!

helmet cam

I built a helmet cam with Joe Breeze's help in January. I bought a mini camcorder-sony handycam-with image stabilization and an additional wide angle lense. Then we built a stainless L shaped mount and put it on a BMX helmet, with the addition of a counter weight on the other side. Kind of heavy compared to the lipstick cameras, but the picture quality is far better. So far we have shot a FAST LAP DOWN REPACK with Joe wearing the helmetcam and it came out great! The plan is to shoot several other great downhill runs in Marin and package them in a video for sale.

I did some helmet cam footage for an XC race in cwmcarn 2yrs ago. camera was tiny & worth nearly £2K! (which I tried not to think about when a low branch slammed into it ;)
the pic quality was amazing & much smoother (IE very little vibration) than I woulda thought. the company used to hire cameras out in cwmcarn, not sure if they're still going? worth a search tho as they were well into it.
personally i think the novelty would wear off pretty quick

You need a Sport-Cam kit. They sell them on eBay amongst other places.

Have a look at this for example - £55+£6.95 P&P. Sport Cam have their own website too - mentioned on the listing.

I know a few motorcyclists who use this kit quite effectively.

This kit is £105 - no camera included - or a full kit inc camera for £299.

Luckily, many other cameras are compatible. Here's the current list - you need a cam with an AV input, so this list is a yes or no - not ALL & EVERY camera is listed though, so you could prolly pick up a second hand cam on eBay or somewhere.

2 years aago i sused a Vio sport and hated it. The videos turned out okay but the battery life was awful. I bought it so i could video practice race runs and go over the course the night before the event. 1/2 the time i ran out of battery 1/2 way down the hill. It all depends on what you are using them for. However i just heard a rumor that Trek of all people was goinf to release one under the Bontrager label. I have a feeling if theydo this it will probably be a real nice product. I don't see why they would even make an attempt if they couldn't win w/ it.

I use one of these for track days and enduros:-

Ive had mine for a few years now and the picture quality is great.
The quality/time can be adjusted at a trade off ie 2 hours=iffy quality, 1 hour=good quality but if you only want a helmet cam for 20 mins in the bedroom ;) quality will be stunning!

I want one as well :) if you look on BikeRadar there's a big thread with links to footage and what they were filmed on ;)

There's some really good footage of peoples morning commutes, crashes and various altercations with stroppy drivers

There's a bloke on the Chase Trails/Midlands MTB forums who uses DogCamSport kit to make videos for Chase Trails fans to peruse over - the kinl to the kit is here.
