Brian Scott was a friend of mine. You've probably never heard of him. If you've ridden the Trans Pennine Trail near Sykehouse in South Yorkshire you may also be grateful for his work. Brian was the original TPT Ranger between Doncaster and Goole, and contributed a considerable amount of work to the route in that area.

Later he became the volunteer lock keeper at Sykehouse Lock, and was well known to many local boaters, walkers, cyclists and anglers. He was devoted and ever present at his beloved lock tower, with his two black labradors along to assist, for over 9 years.

If you knew him he was quite a character. A real straight-shooter: direct and forthright, with a sharp wit and a talent for creative use of profanity. A proper Yorkshireman. Underneath the bluff exterior was a decent human being. I shall miss him. Quite a lot. He died, suddenly and unexpectedly, this morning 27th September 2024 aged 77.

If you're ever passing by, give a nod to the lock tower and thank him for the trail you're following. He'd probably tell you to 'fack off aaht ovit', but know that actually he'd really appreciate it.
