I do love building wheels!

Re:

 Thread. If you don't get the small details right....

My tip is always use a dab of Cu Anti Seize on alloy nipples so they don't lock up when they corrode a bit.

Re:

Now I'm scared of going on rides! Worried that everyone is going to point and laugh cause my stickers aren't inline :(

Re:

Don't worry – just ride and have fun :D that's what it's all about at the end of the day. There's no regulations. Retrobike is the antidote to the self-appointed Velominati and their 'rules'!

Re:

Ya - just like Tom says in 'Risky Business' .... "sometimes in life, ya just gotta say what the fu_k" ...

;)

Re:

Sometime back, I got some books out of my local library (yep, they still exist).

One was Geraint Thomas's bio which was genuinely entertaining. Anyone who can suffer so many setbacks, yet keep plugging away with good humour, is a worthy role model I think. In the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he looked like he was going to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when he flatted out then had to wait and wait for support to arrive then fumble and fit any old clunker wheel they had hanging around from from Halfords' basement, in order to carry on. My missus (who is proudly Welsh) was beside herself at this point watching it on TV. Somehow, Geraint manage to get going again and still maintain his lead and go on to win gold. She was screaming the house down by time. But I digress.

The other book I borrowed from the library was one published by The Velominati: 'The Rules' http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/ I got this one out of curiosity. Although some of 'the rules' are amusing in places, I thought WTF – who are these humourless gimps? Get a grip, it's just a bike in the scheme of things. Unless you're entering competition events, riding is about fun and thrills. Just make sure you fit the right brand of grips though :xmas-wink:

Re:

The 'rules' are hilarious. They started as one man's rage against the stupid do' and dont's that were constantly thrown up by the serious crowd on rides. The were originally a joke but then got taken over by the self same group of serious people and are actually taken seriously by some rather than the joke they were meant to be. I live in Surrey and the high number of Rule followers down here is scary...

As with everything on this site you can take everything to extremes, the great thing is there isn't the level of mocking or derision if you don't go to the extreme that you'll see on other 'specialist' site.
It should go without saying that wheels won't fall apart if the logos aren't aligned, they may just buckle more easily.

Thats being silly now

Re:

I don't know if it's a post-OCD, exorcism kind of thing, but I don't like my tyre logos inline with the valves, so I'll make sure they're randomly placed. If the bikes gonna say anything about it's owner, ''meticulous and tasteful build'' is alright but I don't want it to be a badge to OCD.
..Mind you, the random positioning is very carefully chosen. ;)

Re:

For me, having a tyre logo lined up with the valve saves me fumbling with the wheel to find the valve. May be I need to admit I now need wear specs

I would say that most of us are already in the OCD category - and happy to be
I don't believe mines to be that harmful , even to me
so I try to place the hub logo visible through the rim hole and put my tyres logo in a symetric manner to rim stickers and rim hole !

I know "good manners" to disappear little by little in our everyday life  so I try at least to keep "cycling good manners" alive ;)
