It looks like BETD do travel upgrades for many of the older frames too.
Basically I'd say the '04-'07 frames are the best looking of them all. But that's a matter of taste. Previous generation looked too industrial for my tastes and the graphics were a nightmare.
I was working at a Specialized dealership when I bought the FSR second-hand earlier this year and frankly I think they've gotten uglier again recently. They've also started using non-standard shocks on many of their higher end machines.
Most relevant changes are travel, geometry adjustments to go with diff. amounts of travel - and the addition of disc hardware as standard.
