Old School Hero
Let's get something straight right off the bat.
You lot are a bad influence!
Having seen some of the lovely builds on here I decided to indulge myself and build the bike I wanted (but couldn't afford) back when I was racing as a youngster.
First up was tracking down a suitable Vitus 979 frameset and forks.
Requirements were for a 56-57 cm frame and either dark blue or white and a later model with the grub screw seat bolt. Preferably blue with yellow decals. So here's the frame after a thorough cleaning, polish, new decals and refaced.
The Bottom bracket is a Mavic 610 still as smooth as the day it left the factory. The headset is new from Velo Orange who seem to be the only game in town for new French thread kit.
I had intended fitting a Mavic 305 or 310 headset but both of mine are English threads and the forks are French thread. If anyone has a French thread version they'd like to sell or trade then drop me a PM.
There's a fair few marks on the blue anodising but I decided to keep the patina rather than paint it. We all earn a few scars over the years eh?
While I had the frame stripped I had to weigh it.
Frame: 1.49 Kg
Forks: 0.52 Kg
Not bad for the era.
More to come as the SSC groupset gets tidied up and installed.
