How to wrap handlebar tape without brake lever hoods

I'm not really a roadie but I've recently acquired an old tourer for going to the gym and the occasional road ride.

I've just got some Easton bar tape to fit (nothing on the bars at the moment) and don't want to mess it up as I haven't done this before.

I've watched some stuff on YouTube about how to wrap the bars but all the guides are for modern levers with hoods....how do I wrap the tape neatly around old levers?

Loosen the lever clamps such that you can slip the tape behind - when you get to the levers, do a figure-8 around the lever, you end-up changing the direction of the tape, but it given the best coverage. You might need to try is a few time to get the overlap rights and still reach the centre of the bars. My tip is wrap the bars in electrical tape first - the bar tape doesn't stick as fiercely and it's easier to reposition.

Appreciate the help monty dog - I managed to make a half decent job of it! Cheers

In all fairness, I imagine most people didn't have anymore idea than you and were hoping to see a useful reply advising how to do it.

That describes my position anyway! :)

Another way, also works for levers with hoods, only works for internal clamp type though:

put lever on bars

mark the clip position on the bars with a bit of tape or a marker

take off lever leaving the clip on the bars

wrap tape, in one continuous wrapping, no need to do figures of 8 or anything, although you might need to use small pieces of tape to fill any gaps.

put lever back on, over the tape.

This has the advantage you don't need to bend the hoods, which will probably damage old hoods.
