Getting a new one back in is my next challenge. Is there a certain knack to that, then?

A straight (sic) eye. solid bit of timber and a big 'ammer. And/or a vice.

you just have to keep checking everything's square as you wind it in, take your time and back it off and adjust if its not going in straight. Only do one cup at a time of course.

Or just use a big screwdriver/scrap metal pipe like a lot of other people do. They aren't made of glass so as long as you don't go mental they are easy to tap out.

Absolutely, but personally with old frames I like knocking them out and pressing them in as square as possible with minimal chance of bashing them on an angle, as you don't know how well the headtube will take to it, especially if its already compromised.
