How many is too many? How do you warrant them all?

mmmmmmm

THE REASON I HAVE MORE THAN ONE.....

Runners have learned that nothing improves a run as much as a new pair of shoes, or shorts, or socks, or something. Bikes, unfortunately, cost a lot more, but the effect is the same. Make your bicycles so different that your experience on one is unlike the other – a mountain bike and a road bike, a multispeed and a single speed, or a clunker, or a recumbent. For some people even different handlebars are enough of a change. It's worth a try.

Ride Forever
Plagarized from the Bridgestone Bicycles catalogue 1994
(Grant Petersen of Bridgestone now owns and runs Rivendell Bicycles)

I have:

1991 Carerra Monza, daily road rider.
1993 Dyna Tech Ti road bike. had it since it was new, too precious to lock up in town but still ride it.
1997/8 Orange Clockwork XT. Currently my only MTB until the Pace arrives.

I have had as many as 6 and that was, to be honest, probably too many for me.

No justification required. ;)

1 retro full suser
1 modern full suser trial centre/marathon bike
1 retro garage queen
1 retro commuter/training bike
1 retro off-road work horse hardtail

The way how I classify my recent bikes.

"Everyone should have at least six"

Would hate to displease Mr Mitchell, and I can confidently say that by means of that assessment at least, I wouldn't.

However, there is always room for improvement (so is said), and improvement in my case would most certainly take precedent over room.

To answer the OP's first two questions:

1. How many is too many? More than you need.
2. How do you warrant them all? Reason the need.

That means, each one should fulfil a requirement, and that requirement should be well understood.

Saya What???

Well, it's not really good enough to simply declare "I have 42 bikes because that's my favorite number."

You should go through a 'what's the root cause?' process to find out the true answer.

e.g.

I have 42 bikes because I'm 42.

Why?

Because I need one bike for each year I've taken up room on the planet.

Why??

Because it's a way of counting out my days that means the fewer days I have left, the more tangible I appear to be.

Why?

Because without the sweet caress of those real objects, it would feel like I'm vanishing slightly with each day that passes.

Fair enough chap; chin up and keep at it. (And you might want to get a few more Ti bikes as they decay more slowly than most. Paint 'em brightly and give 'em names: like Peaches, or Bobby Brewster)

IMO a sensible number to stop at is double figures (i.e. 10 or more).

Money is not that much of an issue since I buy nearly new from ebay - some good bargains on there or else got some good deals in sales. And unless one buys top of the range exotcia, the bikes are not that expensive. :?

Keeping them as I have space although the garage is getting a bit tight  (looking to lose a Saracen Kilicomp and Whyte PRST-1) but no need to sell others as would get a fraction of what I consider them to be worth.

For example, 1996 Proflex XP-8 - bought new (in sale) with Z1 Bomber, can't remember what I paid for it but would be in region of £ 1,600 (that would be £ 3k in today's money). In vgc, all working but I doubt I'd see £ 500 if I tried to sell it.

In proces of converting it to disc brakes so will get back on it once more.

I've got three, 1988 Explosif, 1995 Explosif and 2009 Singular Hummingbird and, no, I can't really justify owning more than one. I suppose that I really should get rid of the two Explosifs (as the Hummingbird does everything that they do, but better) but they don't take up that much space and for what I'd get for them it's just not worth the trouble - they'll just languish in my workshop until my heirs decide to clean it out, I suppose.

But then I've got four electric basses too, and as I don't many recording/live gigs anymore I don't suppose that's justifiable either.

i currently have enough storage for around 30 fully built bikes, but stick to 4 but make sure the other halfs bikes are of high enough standard for me to use ;)
