how did they get this on?

Cos i need to get it off!

A twist grip at the top of the drop bars. I have had the tape and brake lever off so the shifter is bare on the bars but the plastic barrel that forms the body of the shifter seems to be too long to get round the bend. I can't believe that on a budget bike they dismantled the shifter to get it on there. :?

I have found on Sheldon brown that you can split the centre tube on a gripshift and 'distort' the thing round the bars -

Historically I have never had a problem dismantling Gripshifts.. but this is Shimano, and as we know each and every Shimano shifter is inhabited by at least 28 angry sprung-loaded Scatter Pixies.

Re:

A thousand apologies to you CCE.
I simply loosened the clamp so the bar and shim would rotate then tried to twist each side in opposite directions. I should have taken the front plate off the stem
Here's how it's done
