How best to look after gum brake hoods

for gums I use vaselin (liquid), pretty cheap. I go to the pharmacy with a little bottle and they fill it for an euro... (otw it costs more the bottle than the liquid ;)

Is that the same as Vaseline? If so, you might have a problem as it’s petroleum based and although in the short term will “freshen up” rubber, it will soon start to degrade it.

ooooops! It seems you are right; Although newer compounds can have better properties, natural rubber (as used in old hoods) degradates with oil derivates like Vaseline...

I was not aware .... Will not do it anymore . Thanks!!! (will keep using it on my off-road motorbike tyres, it works cool after washing:)

I was making a not dissimilar mistake with a brooks leather saddle, chaps here soon advised me that adding baby oil was a fatal error.
